The last bell has rung, the backpacks are stuffed in closets, and the calendar is wide open. For Tampa Bay boat owners, that can only mean one thing: the water is calling, and this summer is yours to claim.

Whether you’ve got a center console, a pontoon, or a blue-water cruiser, the Gulf Coast is bursting with experiences that no theme park can match. Here’s how to make the most of every nautical mile this season.

1. Explore the Forgotten Coast of Tampa Bay

Most boaters stick to the same familiar routes, but summer is the perfect time to push beyond them. Head north toward Anclote Key Preserve State Park, where pristine beaches are only accessible by boat. Drop anchor, wade ashore, and let the kids hunt for shells on a stretch of sand that feels like it belongs to you alone.

Or venture south into Charlotte Harbor, one of Florida’s largest and most underexplored estuaries. The fishing is legendary, the sunsets are outrageous, and the crowds are thin.

2. Chase the Tarpon

Summer is prime tarpon season on Florida’s Gulf Coast, and few experiences on the water rival the heart-stopping moment when a silver king launches itself skyward. The waters around Boca Grande Pass, just a day cruise from Tampa, are world-famous for it.

You don’t have to be a hardcore angler to enjoy it. Even watching someone else hook up while you’re anchored nearby with a cold drink in hand is genuinely electrifying.

3. Anchor Up at Beer Can Island (Picnic Island)

Just off the Hillsborough Bay, Picnic Island is a beloved local sandbar scene where boats raft up, music plays, and the whole bay seems to be in a good mood at once. It’s festive, friendly, and quintessentially Tampa. Pack a cooler, bring the paddleboards, and let the afternoon dissolve into something wonderful.

4. Snorkel the Artificial Reefs

Tampa Bay and the surrounding Gulf waters are home to dozens of artificial reef sites: sunken ships, bridge rubble, and purpose-built structures teeming with marine life. Sites like the Blackthorn wreck off St. Petersburg offer accessible snorkeling and diving for all skill levels.

Strap on a mask and fins, and suddenly the world underneath your hull reveals itself. Sergeant majors, snapper, goliath grouper. It’s an underwater neighborhood down there.

5. Island-Hop to the Keys of Pine Island Sound

A longer but unforgettable run takes you down to Pine Island Sound and the cluster of barrier islands around Captiva and Cayo Costa. This is old Florida: sleepy fishing villages, osprey nests, and water so clear it almost glows. Pull up to Cabbage Key for a cheeseburger (allegedly the inspiration for Jimmy Buffett’s famous song) and feel time slow down in the best possible way.

6. Night Fishing Under the Stars

Once the kids are old enough (or the adults are young enough at heart), night fishing off Tampa Bay’s bridges and channels is a ritual worth starting. The snook stack up under bridge lights like clockwork in summer, and there’s something deeply satisfying about the quiet darkness, the glow of the water, and the sudden strike that shatters the calm.

7. Dolphin Sunrise Cruise

Set out early, before the heat and before the crowds, and head into the mouth of Tampa Bay as the sun comes up. Bottlenose dolphins are almost guaranteed company, riding your bow wake and leaping in the pink morning light. Bring coffee. Bring the family. Leave the phones in a bag for the first hour.

You’ll talk about it for years.

Make This Summer Count

The boats that get used are the ones that get loved. Every summer has a handful of perfect days, the kind where the water is glass, the fish are biting, and everyone on board is exactly where they want to be.
